Arsenal and Mikel Arteta had been on a good run of form in the Premier League until Saturday. The Gunners were forced to let go of their unbeaten record owing to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of AFC Bournemouth. Even though Arsenal were clear favorites to win the game, a ‘silly’ red card ended up costing them dearly. Star defender William Saliba was given his marching orders after denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity for the hosts.
The unfortunate moment came in the 30th minute of the game, when an awkward back pass from Leandro Trossard put William Saliba in a difficult position. A direct red meant that Arsenal were down to ten men, and Bournemouth gradually claimed the upper hand. Despite the red card, Arsenal had a clear chance to take the lead through Gabriel Martinelli. His shot was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga, after which Ryan Christie scored the opener from an ingenious set piece routine.
A poorly timed back pass from Jakub Kiwior gave David Raya no option but to bring down Evanilson, who was on a 1v1 with the Spaniard. The subsequent penalty that followed was comfortably converted by Justin Kluivert, making it 2-0 for the hosts. Many fans criticized the match officials for their decisions while others felt that they were spot on.

Mikel Arteta FUMINGLY reacts to red card and first loss of the season
William Saliba conceded the first red card of his Arsenal career, meaning he won’t be available for the crucial match against Liverpool. Mikel Arteta‘s men also lost a game for the first time this season on a night in which much didn’t go their way. Following the full-time whistle, Arteta spoke to the press, as he made no effort to conceal his frustration and disappointment at the result.
Arteta also pointed to Martinelli’s chance in the second half and suggested that the red card from Saliba was technically unavoidable. He refrained from assessing his teams’ performance, stating that playing away from home with ten men for more than 60 minutes is in itself a challenge.

Can’t remember the last time Arsenal lost a game where their fans just accepted defeat without going on about how there’s this huge conspiracy against them.

Only Arsenal fans will convince themselves there’s an agenda against them over a clear denial of a goalscoring opportunity… https://t.co/UXg4FdnHBg pic.twitter.com/zEnj7eg7Rd

As things stand, Arsenal are third in the Premier League with 17 points from a possible 24. Despite being level on points with Manchester City and just one behind Liverpool, it is to be noted that both sides have a game in hand.
