Arsenal and Manchester United both had to settle for a draw at the Emirates stadium in the Premier League as neither team could break the deadlock. This result means that Manchester United slip further away from Manchester City who are now sitting pretty at the top of the league table.

For Arsenal the problems started straight from the before the match as there was no Pierre Emrick Aubameyang who’s out with personal reasons. Moreover there was also no sign of young sensation Bukayo Saka and left back Kieran Tierney.

Cavani came the closest for Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes had two golden opportunities to put the visitors in front. The first was when he went through on goal after a lovely balanced pass from Paul Pogba. He cut inside and avoided centre back David Luiz in doing so and attempted a curling effort. With the form he’s in you would expect him to put that away. But the ball went flying high much to the relief of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The next chance came in via free kick right at the top of the penalty box in the dying minutes if the first half. Bruno Fernandes attempted to chip it above the wall but was denied by the head of David Luiz. It was an awkward position for Bernd Leno had the ball taken a healthy deflection and was lucky to go over for a corner.

Arsenal had most of the good opportunities in the second half. The first was just there minutes after the interval when Cedric Suarez delivered in a delicious delivery into the box for substitute Willian. But the Brazilians shot was poor and lacked both power and conviction and was easily cleared away by Aaron Wan Bissaka. Alexandre Lacazette rattled the bar post with his shot from a free kick which he won.

Just two minutes from the end of the match when Wan Bissaka’s cross fell at the feet of Uruguayan international Edison Cavani who tried to volley it in only to place the shot agonisingly wide. Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard too came on late in the match for a cameo appearance.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær thinks Manchester United should’ve won the game

“I felt we had the bigger chances to win the game. Decent performances, good defensively, two massive chances in the second half. We had a good performance. You come away with a share of possession, the bigger chances. There was a spell when we dropped off and were a little bit passive, but otherwise I’m pleased with the boys. Wednesday night was a disappointing one, but today was a good performance. We take this point and move on, it’s Southampton again.”

David Luiz who put in an extraordinary effort was rightly adjudged as the man of the match. It was a great game. Both teams tried to win. Both had opportunities. It was a proper match. It’s frustrating because we love to win, but we tried our best. We have to try to improve every single day. You have to be humble. The boss is doing a great job. The young boys have progressed a lot and are fantastic. The team has a great atmosphere. We are far from first. But the ambition has to be there, for the first position. When it is mathematically possible, you have to try.”
