After missing out on the Premier League title once again to champions Manchester City, Arsenal Football Club look all the more rejuvenated to make a mark this season. Despite clubs still being in pre-season, Gunners were treated to an exemplary performance against ‘invincibles’ Bayer Leverkusen, who claimed the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal without a single defeat last season.
Mikel Arteta‘s men took on Xabi Alonso‘s continent as fans prepared for a treat. Supporters were not disappointed as Arsenal got to work within the opening 10 minutes. Oleksandr Zinchenko opened the scoring at the Emirates as he fired in a cutback from the edge of the box. Alonso’s men hadn’t recovered from the setback as Leandro Trossard made it 2-0 from a well-worked team effort.
Gabriel Jesus tripled the home side’s advantage in the 38th minute, and fans were under the impression that Leverkusen were only a shadow of their former selves.
Kai Havertz finally put the visitors out of their misery as Matej Kovar picked the ball out of his net for the fourth time in the game. Adam Hlozek pulled one back for his side, even though it was nothing more than a consolation.
Fans thrilled as Arsenal demolish Bundesliga champions
If the 4-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen is any indication of what’s to come for Arsenal, the club are ‘destined’ for success in the 2024/25 campaign, feels the fans. A fan claimed that the invincible Bundesliga champions were no match for Mikel Arteta‘s brilliance. Another added that the Gunners were bound to win the Premier League and reach the UCL final this time around.
A few fans however, didn’t let themselves get too carried away, and reminded everyone that pre-season games cannot be seen as a precursor. Some remembered Granit Xhaka‘s comments about taking ‘two steps forward’ after moving from Arsenal. What followed was a mockery of how poor he performed against his former club and criticism of his comments.
Despite what happened on social media, Arsenal players surrounded their former captain after the game as he was given a warm reception at the Emirates. Arsenal fans also took pride of the fact that Xabi Alonso heaped a lot of praise on Arteta following the game. Alonso claimed that his former teammate is a ‘competitive animal’ and that he’s done well to develop the current ‘Arsenal project’.
