Spanish goalkeeper David Raya made an incredible double save against Atalanta to help Arsenal secure a point in their opening 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League match. The 29-year-old keeper, however, stated that the brilliant save might not be the best in his career.
David Raya was named the Man of the Match against reigning Europa League champions for his impressive display. Atlanta were awarded a penalty in the 51st minute following Thomas Partey’s foul on Ederson inside the box.
The North London giants, however, remained on level terms thanks to Raya’s double save. He first dived low towards the right to stop Mateo Retegui’s spot-kick and then quickly got back on his feet to scramble across the line and dive towards the right to save the rebound shot.
Raya’s spectacular double-save drew praise from fans and even manager Mikel Arteta, who described it as the best he had ever seen. The goalkeeper, however, noted that while the saves he made against Atalanta were undoubtedly incredible, he would not identify it as the best save in his career. He, however, said that it could be among his top three saves.

Raya also credited Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana for guiding him before the penalty and hoped to improve upon his performances in the future. He is not new to making headlines with his saves, as the Spaniard has received praise for a similar save against Aston Villa this season.

Following Arsenal’s UCL opener against Atalanta, David Raya, in an interview, revealed his favorite football pundit, leaving many surprised. Interestingly, he did not pick former Gunners’ star and French football legend Theirry Henry.
In an interview on CBS Sports, Raya was asked who his favorite pundit was and he surprisingly named Micah Richards. Explaining his choice, the Arsenal goalkeeper said while he found the other pundits good, he singled out the former Manchester City star as the funniest among the lot.

Richards, upon hearing the answer, ran towards the screen and kissed Raya’s image on it. The rest of the panel found it hilarious, which included Henry, ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and host Kate Abdo.
