Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal has finally gotten the green light, as per Fabrizio Romano (Via GOAL)
Arsenal Football Club had the best defensive record for a Premier League club last season. Despite missing out on the League title yet again, the Gunners only conceded an unbelievable 29 goals in 38 games throughout the season! As Mikel Arteta sets his sights on the elusive Premier League title, fans have started to feel that this finally might be their year.
Arsenal‘s backline consisting of Ben White, William Saliba, and Gabriel Magalhaes is undoubtedly one of the best in the business. To add Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori to the mix would only better their chances of finally getting the better of Manchester City in League format. Calafiori’s move to London was made official recently, with the deal amounting to €4 million per season for the defender.
The 22-year-old joined Arsenal on a five-year-long deal with documents already exchanged between the two clubs. Bologna will receive a sum amounting to £33.7 million and £4.2 million in add-ons.
Despite a group-stage exit at the Euros, the Italian defender was solid throughout the group stage, turning a lot of heads in the process.
Arsenal fans on cloud nine as Riccardo Calafiori officially becomes a Gunner
Defensively, Arsenal have everything it takes to go toe to toe with Manchester City in the Premier League. A fan commented that Arsenal’s defense has started to look like the Great Wall of China with their recent signings. Another fan added that Arteta’s side will only end up conceding less than 10 goals throughout the season.

It didn’t take long for the comparisons to begin, with Leny Yoro being the first. A Gunner claimed that Yoro was nowhere close to being at the level of Calafiori and that United overpaid for a teenager with just one year left on his contract. Some, however, were skeptical of signing an Italian, given the fact that most Italian players end up playing and retiring in Serie A.
Manchester City fans, however, were still confident that they would win the League over their rivals on the final matchday. Certain Arsenal fans added that the combined ‘aura’ of their backfour was enough to prevent the opposition from scoring. Arsenal’s most recent pre-season friendly against Bournemouth ended in a 5-4 win on penalties after the score read 1-1 in normal time.
