Arsenal enjoy easy 3-0 victory over Sheffield courtesy of a Lacazette brace

Arsenal vs Sheffield

Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier league as they defeated bottom placed Sheffield United by a 3-0 margin. Alexandre Lacazette scored a brace and Gabriel Martinelli added another goal for Arsenal in a comfortable win.

On a night when the Gunners were rarely troubled by the Blades, Mikel Arteta’s side even managed to end a 15-game run without a clean sheet. The only negative was an injury to Bukayo Saka who went down in the second half holding his thigh.

Arsenal missed several chances before Lacazette started and finished a flowing move in the 33rd minute as he side-footed a cheeky Dani Ceballos assist past home goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The French striker drilled a shot wide from 16 metres before Martinelli made it 2-0 in the 71st minute when he tapped in a close-range rebound as Ramsdale parried a Nicolas Pepe shot straight into his path.

It was the Brazilian’s first Premier League goal since January 2020 when he netted against Chelsea and it came as fitting reward for a fine all-round performance. Lacazette then scored his 50th goal in the Premier league and sealed Arsenal’s victory in the 85th minute of the match.

The match wasn’t all good news, however, as midfielder Bukayo Saka was subbed off with an injury in the 69th minute.

“I don’t know,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said when asked about the injury after the match. “He had to come off. He had discomfort in his thigh and it’s the last thing that we need because we’re missing some big players at the moment and we don’t want to lose another one. Hopefully, it’s not that serious.”

The result lifted Arsenal into the top half of the Premier League table into 9th position. For Sheffield the season looks done and dusted as they continue to sit at the bottom of the table. Sheffield are currently 18 points away from safety and have only 8 matches left to play.
