Arsenal and Liverpool are set to fight hard to sign Joao Pedro in the January transfer window. According to reliable reports, Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot are both interested in reinforcing their attacking output for the second half of the season. Brighton & Hove Albion will take €70 million to sell the much-anticipated transfer target. Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City side are also keen on the player and hence are looking into what happens with him in the transfer window.
Arsenal had difficulty in finding the back of the net as they were held to a goalless draw against Everton on their home ground. They failed to get close to Liverpool in the points table, who have 36 points from 15 games and are leading the charge. The lack of goals displayed the need for the Gunners to sign a quality attacker to strengthen their output in front of goal in the latter half of the season.
Gabriel Martinelli is struggling with his form. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus have not been good enough to score goals consistently this season. Arteta needs a player who can give him consistent goals and break down tight defenses. Hence, the Gunners have shortlisted Pedro as the one to sign in January.
Pedro can play in any position in the attacking half. He can play centre-forward, attacking midfielder, and even on the wings. This versatility has made him seem useful in the eyes of Arteta. The €70 million fee demanded by Brighton is well within the range of the Gunners, so it won’t be unlikely that they go for him in the January transfer window.
Why does Arne Slot want Joao Pedro?
The Reds are leading the points table of the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, but Slot still wants to strengthen his attacking players. Their only signing in the summer was Federico Chiesa, and hence, they do have the necessary funds to go big for Pedro in the January transfer window. Slot has the right plan in place to sign the Brazilian in the upcoming window.
The future of Mohamed Salah is not clear. His contract is ending after the 2024/25 season. Liverpool does need a long-term replacement for him. Moreover, Darwin Nunez has not been a consistent performer in front of the goal, and Slot is not sure about the consistency of Luis Diaz as well. Hence, Pedro has emerged as a viable target for the Anfield side.
The Brazilian has played 10 games so far this season and has scored four goals and provided three assists in those games. It remains to be seen where he finally moves in the upcoming transfer window. Will it be Liverpool or Arsenal, or will he stay at Brighton? Only time will tell.
