- Max Dowman, at 16 years old, became the youngest goal-scorer in Premier League history during a match against Everton.
- Due to EPL regulations, Dowman is required to change separately from the first-team dressing room until he turns 18.
- His performance has drawn praise from football legends, including Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry, highlighting his potential in English football.
Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman is being touted as the ‘next big thing’ in English football, after having recently delivered a last-minute cameo in a crucial Premier League encounter against Everton. The young midfielder, however, is barred from entering the first-team dressing room.
At just 16 years and 73 days old, Max Dowman delivered an unforgettable performance for the Gunners in their 31st match of the ongoing 2025-26 EPL season.
He is ascending through the ranks to become a part of the Arsenal senior team, after having graduated from the Hale End academy. His first appearance for the senior team came at the age of just 15, in an EFL Cup match against Brighton in October 2025.
His performance on debut drew praise from manager Mikel Arteta, who called upon the teenager to break the deadlock against Everton. Dowman was introduced in the 74th minute for Martin Zubimendi, and he then went on to assist Viktor Gyokeres to help his team take the lead in the 89th minute. In the final minute of stoppage time, he became the youngest EPL goal-scorer after scoring a stunning solo goal from a counter-attack from the Arsenal half.
🚨 Gyökeres: “Max Dowman is incredible. You can see how he plays, he plays so calm and without feat every time he gets the ball…

Despite his late heroics, the 16-year-old midfielder could not be a part of the celebrations in the dressing room, primarily due to the EPL’s ‘Safeguarding Regulations’. Dowman is not allowed in the first-team dressing room, as the rules state that a player under 18 cannot change in the same room as the adult squad members. Even during matchdays and for training, Dowman is forced to use a separate changing area alone.

The EPL regulations are severely strict, and it even prohibits U-18 players from sleeping in the same room with their adult teammates during away trips. Teenage players cannot sign a professional contract with an English club for more than three years, to prevent long-term exploitation. Additionally, another rule, which, however, does not apply to Dowman, bans U-18 players from wearing shirts that have a betting company as a sponsor.
Arsenal’s Max Dowman will remain away from the first-team dressing room until December 2027, when he turns 18. Moreover, another player who had to endure a similar separation was left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, who remained away from the dressing room until September 2024.
Wayne Rooney shares funny Max Dowman takeaway as Premier League title race heats up
Former England international Wayne Rooney heaped praise on Arsenal’s teenage prodigy Max Dowman for his impactful display during the club’s EPL clash against Everton at the Emirates. The Gunners won 2-0, thanks to a late assist and a goal from the 16-year-old midfielder.

Dowman’s cameo helped Arsenal move nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, and have 70 points from 31 matches. Mikel Arteta’s side would have endured a frustrating draw against Everton had Dowman not shown off his late brilliance. He was praised by legends like Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney, with the latter even sharing a ‘funny’ prediction about the Arsenal wonderkid.

Speaking on his BBC show, Rooney appreciated the way Max Dowman has been balancing his football career and high school responsibilities. He even pointed to the fact that the youngster is soon to appear for his GCSE examinations, a must for school-goers in the UK.
Furthermore, the 40-year-old suggested that the 16-year-old would become an EPL champion with Arsenal, even before he completes school. He said (via BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show):
He has got his GCSEs, and his education, I’m sure for him and his family, is important as well… What an opportunity for him to be around the squad. He could be a Premier League winner when he’s still finishing school off.
Dowman now holds the record for being the youngest goal-scorer in the EPL, but the title was previously held by James Vaughan. The former Everton man was 16 years and 270 days old when he netted back in 2005.
