Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta might have lost a formidable friend at the club, as sporting director Edu Gaspar surprisingly announced his decision to depart after six years in charge. A former Arsenal player, Edu has been behind the club’s upsurge over the past few seasons.
Edu was a part of the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ squad between 2000 to 2005. He played 127 matches during those five seasons and went on to win the EPL twice and the FA Cup thrice. After retiring in 2010, Edu became Brazilian side Corinthians’ sporting director, while also assisting the Brazilian national team later on.
In January 2019, Edu made his return to his former side, Arsenal, becoming their first-ever technical director. He was later elevated to the role of sporting director in 2022 and had an ambition to revive Arsenal’s past glory.
The Brazilian played a key role in appointing Mikel Arteta as the club’s manager in 2019 and forged a brilliant partnership with the Spaniard to transform the club into EPL title contenders. Edu was behind the signings of some of the club’s best players currently, including Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, William Saliba, Kai Havertz, David Raya, and many others.
