It was another scintillating outing for Arsenal as they clinched their second straight win at the expense of Aston Villa. It needed some doing for the Gunners to rattle the deadlock as Villa kept them silent for more than an hour. It was substitute Leandro Trossard who scored the opening goal for the Gunners while Thomas Partey clinched the bragging rights with a second.
Like other icons of the sport, Trossard has also created his own signature celebration where he would imitate the shape of goggles with his two hands in front of his eyes. After scoring against Aston Villa, he took a while before he pulled off his similar stunt. William Saliba, his fellow teammate at Arsenal, egged him on to pull off the celebration after the opener.
The celebrations were just starting for Arsenal as Thomas Partey would soon latch onto a Bukayo Saka assist to make it 2-0, that doubled the tally of the Gunners in terms of victories in their ongoing season. Mikel Arteta was absolutely delighted with what he saw as he heaped praises on his men for their fine showdown against Villa.
Arteta expressed his delight at the kind of football that was played by Arsenal. He emphasized on the fact that it was a team game played by the lads while the last 10-12 minutes witnessed the Gunners showing a much better understanding of what exactly was needed. He also underscored the importance of individual brilliance from the players, while heaping praise on the teamwork that won Arsenal the game.
William Saliba’s incredible defence grabbing the fanfare for all the right reasons
Apart from all the teamwork and the individual brilliance up front, the combination of David Raya and William Saliba was the masterclass that saw the Gunners thrive. Around the 31st minute mark, Saliba showed what he is made of, putting in a crucial interception to clear a dangerous Morgan Rogers pull-back.
That was just the beginning of what was some incredible follow-up defensive maneuvers from Saliba. In the 83rd minute, Aston Villa had an incredible chance of pulling a goal back as they drove hard via Jacob Ramsey.
However, an exceptional recovery tackle from Saliba denied them once again. The fans and the experts were absolutely tickled with what they saw from Saliba. With all the boxes ticked, Arsenal may very well start believing again that this season can be theirs.
