Aryna Sabalenka has reclaimed her World No. 1 ranking and she wants to remain on top for a long time, just like 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek. In Riyadh for the WTA Finals, Sabalenka talked about dominating on the WTA Tour.

With three Grand Slam singles titles already in her trophy cabinet, Sabakenka is leading the current generation along with Swiatek, who has lifted five Majors. Being a leader is ‘tough’ but Sabalenka wants to use the opportunity to help the sport, ‘fight for equal prize money’, and help improve the quality of life for women.

I always wanted to dominate the tour like Serena (Williams) did like Iga was able to do for so long. And she’s still close, it’s all going to be decided after this tournament, so who knows? But it’s really inspiring and of course, I want to dominate the tour like they did.

Aryna Sabalenka told Arab News

The 26-year-old played her first group-stage match against Qinwen Zheng and defeated her in straight sets. She is next scheduled to lock horns with Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina.

It’s really competitive and I really love it because this is something that forces us to improve and forces us to get better every day and what motivates us to keep working, keep trying to find something else, to keep improving yourself, mentally, physically.

Aryna Sabalenka said at the press conference

Sabalenka entered the WTA Finals as a heavy favorite, having won three titles on the hard courts since the grass swing. Before arriving in Riyadh, she won the Wuhan Open by beating Qinwen Zheng in the final.

Swiatek, on the other hand, skipped the Asian swing and parted ways with her coach Tomasz Wiktorowski. The WTA Finals is the World No. 2’s first tournament under new coach Wim Fissette.
