World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka had yet another heartbreaking tournament this year as she lost the Roland Garros finals to World No. 2 Coco Gauff. The Belarusian has now lost two Grand Slam finals this year, after being denied a hattrick at the Australian Open by Madison Keys.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka reached her first Grand Slam final outside of her beloved hard court at the Roland Garros 2025. She has had a pretty strong clay season, reaching the finals of the Stuttgart Open where she lost to Jelena Ostapenko, and winning the Madrid Open, where she defeated Gauff.
Sabalenka had even defeated three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinals of the Roland Garros, bageling her in the third set. As Sabalenka gave her runners-up speech, tears welled up in her eyes.
Honestly guys this one hurts so much. Especially after such a tough two weeks. Playing great tennis and then in these terrible conditions to show such terrible tennis in the final, it really hurts. But it’s ok. Anyway, Coco congrats. In these tough conditions, you were a better player than me. Well done on a great two weeks. Congrats on the 2nd slam. You’re a fighter. Hard worker. Congrats you and your team.
Watching Aryna Sabalenka with tears in her eyes before her Roland Garros speech is really hard. 💔💔💔

As the World No. 1 and having reached multiple finals throughout the season, winning two of them, Sabalenka was a strong favorite to clinch the Roland Garros title over Gauff. Gauff had not won any titles this season before this tournament, although she had a strong clay season too, reaching the finals of the Madrid Open and Italian Open.
Sabalenka had lost to Gauff at the 2023 US Open as well in three sets as the American went on to clinch her maiden Grand Slam title. The Belarusian was also a strong favorite to defend her Australian Open title this year.
Coco Gauff comes back from a set down to defeat Aryna Sabalenka at the Roland Garros finals
The Roland Garros victory marked a strong comeback for Coco Gauff, who had struggled with her form throughout the beginning of the season. She then, lost two clay court finals later, with one of them being to Aryna Sabalenka. It is worth noting that she also lost her maiden Roland Garros final in 2022 to Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

Sabalenka began the first set fiercely and was a point away from a 5-1 lead, but Gauff quickly fought back. With a brilliant return and drop shot at 4-1, Gauff won her first break point. At 4-3, Gauff hit an astonishing backhand lob that left the World No. 1 awestruck with her hands over her head. Gauff soon leveled the score to 4-4. Gauff saved set point trailing at 5-4 and 6-5 to eventually take the set to tiebreak.
Although Gauff started the tiebreak strong, taking a 3-0 lead capitalizing on Sabalenka’s errors, the Belarusian soon regained her form and employed some deft drop shots to clinch the tiebreak.
Gauff cruised past the second set, starting strong with a 2-0 lead, and conceding only two games to Sabalenka. At 5-2, Gauff hit an incredible ace to win the second set. Gauff settled quicker in the third set to move a break up and kept her nerve to serve out victory.
The 21-year-old had to survive another break point before winning her second championship point, falling to the clay on her back when Sabalenka pushed a forehand wide. Gauff sealed the victory 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
