Emotions sometimes get the better of Aryna Sabalenka in tense situations, especially when she plays in the final of a major tournament. The ramifications of it this year were defeats in Grand Slam finals.

At the Australian Open, she failed to complete a three-peat following a three-set defeat at the hands of Madison Keys. The dominant Sabalenka once again reached a Grand Slam final, this time at the French Open.

It was once again an American player who denied her the win. Coco Gauff came from a set down to clinch her career’s second Grand Slam singles title. Sabalenka, after losing to eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova at Wimbledon, learned her lesson, and after making it to the US Open final for the third consecutive time, the Belarusian beat Anisimova and defended her crown.

Jason Stacy, one of Sabalenka’s coaches, during his interview on The Line podcast, was asked about how he feels when the 27-year-old shouts at him and the entire team during matches.

But for her to be able to truly be gracious and respectful for that moment, she can’t not be who she is. She has a lot of fire in her, a lot of energy. That was the part we had her, over the years, learn how to maintain. In most situations, the way I look at it is that most people’s strengths are also the biggest weaknesses, if they don’t know how to manage and regulate those things very well, right?

The World No.1 also missed the WTA Finals. She reached the title clash for the second time and ended up losing in straight sets to Elena Rybakina, who was also the eighth player to qualify for the WTA Finals.

You know, as long as, even when she gets upset at us or as a directed venting session or this or that, there’s always been this rule, like, it’s fine. I understand, as long as it doesn’t become personal. When it becomes a personal thing, then there’s a line that we don’t cross. Simple as that. But we all know that everybody gets frustrated. Everyone gets, you know, especially when everything you’re doing, the entire world is watching you and judging you.

Sabalenka took home four titles from nine finals. Apart from the US Open, she won the Brisbane International, Miami Open, and the Madrid Open.

Martina Trevisan on the Battle of the Sexes between Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios

Aryna Sabalenka will be in action later this month. In Dubai, Naomi Osaka‘s agency Evolve will host the Battle of the Sexes between the four-time Grand Slam singles champion and Nick Kyrgios. Many from the tennis community believe there was no need for another man versus woman match. Italian tennis ace Martina Trevisan also gave her opinion on the much-anticipated event.

I think when there are smiles and good behavior, it’s always good, not only for sport but for people. It’s going to be fun.

While Sabalenka has been dominating a great deal, Kyrgios is struggling due to his fitness issues. The Aussie made his comeback at the Brisbane International after 18 months this year and ended up playing six tournaments, winning just one match, defeating America’s Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the Miami Open.

He was last seen in action at the Citi Open, where he played doubles with France’s Gael Monfils, losing the match in the first round. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist’s last singles match was against Karen Khachanov in the second round of the Miami Open.
