Aryna Sabalenka is now a US Open champion. She lifted the title with a thrilling win over Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. After the win, she dedicated the title to her family for believing in her and never giving up on her dreams.
It was Sabalenka’s maiden win at Flushing Meadows. She came close to winning the trophy last year but failed to cross the final hurdle as Coco Gauff came out on top to win her maiden Grand Slam title. Sabalenka, happy after the victory, talked about how she always wanted to make her family proud.
After I lost my father, it has always been my goal to put our family name in the history of tennis. Every time I see my name on that trophy, I’m so proud of myself, I’m proud of my family that they never gave up on my dream and that they were doing everything they could to keep me going. I had this opportunity in life so it really means a lot.Aryna Sabalenka said after her win
Sabalenka lost her father, Sergey Sabalenka, in 2019. He was an ice hockey player and passed away from meningitis at the age of 43.
Aryna Sabalenka speechless after maiden US Open victory
Aryna Sabalenka has become the first player since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to win two hard-court Grand Slam titles in a year. Earlier this year, the 26-year-old won her second major Slam at the Australian Open by beating Qinwen Zheng. Sabalenka has often said in interviews that winning the ‘beautiful’ US Open is one of her dreams.
Oh my God! I’m speechless right now. So many times, I thought I was so close to winning this. It was a dream of mine. Finally, I got this beautiful trophy…it means a lot. It was a difficult couple of weeks.Aryna Sabalenka said
Sabalenka knows how it feels to lose a Grand Slam title after coming too close to it. During the winner’s speech, the Belarusian told Jessica Pegula about the “amazing tennis” she has been playing and said the American can win a major title one day.
The three-time Grand Slam title is 18-1 in Grand Slams, as she lost only the French Open to Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals. She missed the Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics as well.
