Aryna Sabalenka believes focusing on small goals helps her perform better and eventually achieve bigger ones. The Belarusian ace prefers breaking down her objectives into smaller, more manageable tasks.

The 26-year-old’s year hasn’t gone as planned. Aside from her Australian Open win early on, Sabalenka struggled to meet expectations as WTA No. 2, leading to a drop in her ranking. While she reached a few finals and semi-finals, she often failed to advance beyond the early rounds in many tournaments.

Ahead of Wimbledon, Sabalenka suffered an injury and only returned at the Citi Open, where she lost in the semi-final. Hoping to get a win, she is the No. 2 seed at the Canadian Open and is off to a good start as well.

Sabalenka secured a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Yue Yuan in the first round, marking an ideal start to the WTA 1000 tournament and a promising opportunity to climb back up the rankings.

However, she was asked about her goals for this tournament and replied that she is better off without goals. Speaking to the Canadian Open press after the first match win, Sabalenka revealed that she looks at achieving small-term goals rather than looking at the big ones.

I’m good with the small goals. And the big goals, I think everyone has the same goals, like it’s so obvious, we all have the big goals. But I think the key is to focus on the small goals, small steps.

Sabalenka thinks she can play better without thinking about the better goals and continues to try her luck at the Canadian Open.

Aryna Sabalenka hopes to not deal with injury again after her recent experience

Aryna Sabalenka threw light on her experience of playing a tournament right after an injury. She suffered from stomach illness right after her French Open exit, which followed up with a shoulder injury that saw her out of Wimbledon as well.

After a brief break, Sabalenka returned to the Citi Open, aiming to make a memorable comeback. She reflected on her first match, discussing the challenges of staying focused and not pushing herself too hard.

It’s a different experience, I hope not to go through it again in my career. It was very difficult to play the first tournament because you tend to be overprotective, trying not to overdo it, constantly protecting your shoulder, but that ultimately generates more tension.

She beat the Chinese pretty easily, but the draw gets harder as she takes on Katie Boulter next. Another formidable opponent, yet the Brit has never defeated Sabalenka. They have faced off three times before, with the Belarusian emerging victorious in each encounter.
