Aryna Sabalenka‘s campaign at the Australian Open once again ended in a disappointing fashion. She made the final but couldn’t go past Elena Rybakina.
It was, in fact, Sabalenka’s fourth consecutive final at Melbourne Park. Back in 2023, she came from a set down to beat Rybakina and win her career’s first Grand Slam singles title. She successfully defended her crown against Qinwen Zheng the following year.
The Belarusian also reached the final in 2025, but Madison Keys ruined her three-peat dream. In this Australian Open final, Sabalenka lost a set for the first time this season.
Prior to the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, Sabalenka defended her crown at the Brisbane International by defeating Marta Kostyuk. She didn’t drop a set en route to the title.
Then, during the trophy presentation, Sabalenka, while addressing her longtime boyfriend Georgios Frangulis, joked, “Thank you to my boyfriend… hopefully soon I can call you something else.“
She hinted at marrying Frangulis, and fans now believe it’s happening soon. Sabalenka recently took to Instagram and shared a few glammed-up pictures, and even showed off a ring on that finger, captioning the post with: “With a bow on top“.

Sabalenka met Frangulis in 2024 when she became the brand ambassador of his acai company, Oakberry, and their professional relationship then developed into a close friendship. Frangulis often travels with Sabalenka to tournaments.
Annabel Croft thinks Aryna Sabalenka lost her composure in the third set of the Australian Open
After losing the first set in the Australian Open final, Aryna Sabalenka regrouped and increased her intensity in the second set. She capitalized on her lead in the third set, taking a 3-0 lead.

And at that time, Elena Rybakina reeled off five consecutive games before eventually ending the match in her favor. Former player Annabel Croft gave her verdict on Sabalenka’s performance on BBC Radio 5 Live.
I think the composure Sabalenka had for most of the match got her to 3-0 in the final set. I felt that she had really taken her game to another level, but she couldn’t keep forging ahead because there was resistance down the other end. Then the arms started flailing, and it got a little bit immature out there.
Sabalenka now has a 4-4 win-loss record in Grand Slam events. The wins that she registered were at the 2023 and 2024 Australian Open and at the 2024 and 2025 US Open. The finals that she lost were at the 2023 US Open, 2025 Australian Open, 2025 French Open, and this year’s Australian Open.
She wasn’t handling the situation well; she was strutting around, and she lost her composure completely. I felt that Sabalenka really beat herself up in that final set. The minute panic set in, she just steamrolled in the wrong direction.
Annabel Croft added
Sabalenka withdrew from the first WTA 1000 event of the season, the Qatar Open, where last year, she lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opening round. She also suffered an early-round exit at the Dubai Open last year, losing to Clara Tauson in the round of 16.
Rybakina has improved her head-to-head record over the four-time Grand Slam singles champion to 7-8. It was also her second consecutive win over Sabalenka, as before the Melbourne Major, the Kazakh ace defeated her in the championship clash of the WTA Finals.
Rybakina is now a two-time Grand Slam champion. The first title that she lifted was at the 2022 Wimbledon by defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur. Her victory in the Major Down Under helped her get back to career-best No.3 on the rankings table. Before arriving in Melbourne, the 26-year-old also participated in the Brisbane International, but her run ended in the quarterfinals at the hands of Karolina Muchova.
