In Short
  • Aryna Sabalenka expressed frustration over her recent losses in finals, stating she is determined to win the upcoming Indian Wells title match.
  • Elena Rybakina has defeated Sabalenka in their last two finals, including the Australian Open and WTA Championships.
  • The upcoming match is seen as a critical moment for Sabalenka to overcome her finals struggles against a formidable opponent.

The desert has a way of forcing the truth out of people. No crowds to hide behind, no excuses left to lean on, just two of the best tennis players on the planet, a hardcourt in California, and everything on the line.

That’s exactly what the Indian Wells final has become. And Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1, is showing up with something to prove. Sabalenka said in her post-match press conference:

I just want to focus; if I make it to the final, I want to make sure I win, that I take home the trophy. You know, I’m fed up with losing these big finals. It felt like, even though the players were playing incredible tennis in those finals, I felt like I had so many opportunities that I wasn’t taking advantage of. Right now, my mindset is that if I make it to the final, I’ll go out on the court and do everything I can and everything I can’t to get that trophy.

Beyond the individual storylines, this match carries weight for the WTA as a whole. Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina has quietly become one of the best rivalries in the sport. These are two players with elite power games, contrasting personalities, and a track record of producing matches that go down to the wire.

Rybakina has had Sabalenka’s number recently. The Kazakh player beat the Belarusian in the season-concluding WTA Championships final last year. Then, she beat the World No.1 in the Australian Open final.

Aryna Sabalenka’s final problem

Let’s not sugarcoat it. Aryna Sabalenka has had a finals problem. Three of her last four Grand Slam finals since 2025 have ended in defeat.

She has double-faulted on set points. She has let leads slip. She has walked off the court more than once, looking like someone who knows exactly where she went wrong and can’t stop herself from going there anyway.

The 2026 Australian Open was the most recent gut-punch. Elena Rybakina, composed and clinical as ever, handed Sabalenka another loss in a major final. Same rival. Same result. Different city, same feeling.

And now, not even two months later, they’re doing it again. Sunday’s Indian Wells final isn’t just a tennis match. It’s a referendum on whether Sabalenka can rewire something deep in her game.

Elena Rybakina is not making it easy

Elena Rybakina doesn’t do drama. She just wins. The world No. 3 has been a nightmare matchup for Sabalenka, specifically, and for basically everyone else on the WTA Tour when she’s locked in.

Her serve is a weapon that few players can defuse. Her baseline game is aggressive without being reckless. And when matches get tight, she doesn’t blink.

She won this exact tournament in 2023. She beat Sabalenka to do it. She came back in 2026 and beat her again, this time at a Grand Slam. Their head-to-head now sits at 8–7 in Sabalenka’s favor across 15 meetings, closer than most people realize, and trending in a direction that makes Sabalenka fans nervous.

Rybakina’s semifinal run this week was a reminder of just how dangerous she is. She reached Sunday’s final with purpose, and she’s not flying out to California to finish second.
