Aryna Sabalenka claimed her fourth career Grand Slam at the US Open after overcoming Amanda Anisimova in straight sets. The World No.1 became the first player since Serena Williams to defend the title at Flushing Meadows. Also, it was her first Major win of the season.

The 27-year-old has been the most dominant player in the women’s circuit this season, but questions have been raised about her emotional composure in the latter stages of Grand Slam tournaments. The reason behind the questions was that she lost to Madison Keys in the final of the Australian Open in Melbourne in January.

She then hit 70 unforced errors at the Roland Garros final against Coco Gauff, the highest number of errors committed by a player at the tournament this season. Also, she lost to Anisimova in the Wimbledon Championships semi-finals, where she fell in three sets despite being the favorite.

At the New York Grand Slam, Sabalenka answered her critics in her final opportunity of the season with a largely assured performance. The World No.1 defeated Anisimova 6-3, 7-6(3) to win the US Open trophy. She dropped to her knees, overcome with emotion, after securing her fourth major title.

In an interview with WTA, she was asked how relieved she felt after finally winning a Grand Slam this season. The 27-year-old admitted that she was proud of the way she controlled her emotions at the US Open final and was excited to win her fourth major after losing in two finals this season:

After what happened in the early part of the season in the Grand Slam finals, it was very emotional. I learned some tough lessons. Winning this title means a lot to me. I’m very proud of being able to control my emotions so well. I didn’t let them dominate me. I just fought and played fantastic tennis on the court. In the end, I’m proud to have defended my title.

However, Anisimova lost in back-to-back Grand Slam finals this season. The American star was in tears after her defeat to Sabalenka the same way she felt after losing to four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek at the Wimbledon final. But she climbed to World No.4 in the WTA rankings, a career-high ranking after her performance in New York.

Aryna Sabalenka hopes to win more Grand Slams after US Open triumph

Aryna Sabalenka is yet to win a Grand Slam on a natural surface. The four-time major title winner has twice won the Australian Open and US Open. Her best attempt at winning the French Open was finishing as a runner-up in June, and at the Wimbledon Championships, she has been to the semi-finals twice, including this season.

During the aforementioned interview, she revealed that she’s now looking forward to winning more Grand Slams in her career, while adding that winning four major titles already sounds crazy to her:

I think we all have very high expectations, but I’m trying to focus on myself and my development as a player. I always try to give my best and see how far I can go in this sport. When I hear this number (four Grand Slams), it seems crazy to me. It’s crazy to realize that I’ve done it four times. But I hope to do it many more times.

Sabalenka is expected to be back on the court at the China Open in Beijing after taking a short break. The WTA 1000 tournament kicks off on September 24. She reached the quarter-finals of the tournament last year. After the China Open, she will seek to defend her Wuhan Open title in October.
