Belarusian tennis ace Aryna Sabalenka fulfilled one of her biggest dreams- to win a US Open title. The 26-year-old had come agonizingly close to winning it last year and by clinching the first set in the finals, she got a great boost but it was not meant to be. She lost to Coco Gauff and walked back disappointed.
But known for her fighting spirit, Sabalenka came back to New York to fight for her dream once again this year, and she finally has achieved it. Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in the 2024 US Open final to win her maiden singles title at the Flushing Meadows. With her name going on the honor’s board, Sabalenka could not be more proud.
However, despite winning two Grand Slam titles and playing some great tennis in the 2024 season, Aryna Sabalenka is ranked No.2 in the World. Iga Swiatek still tops the chart and is ahead of the Belarusian by more than 2000 ranking points. But Sabalenka is ambitious and hoping to become the World No.1 again.
I'm still hungry, for sure. Another goal for sure is to try to become World No.1 again. But I don't want to talk about this goal. I'm just trying to keep improving myself and keep getting better every day.Aryna Sabalenka said on the WTA Insider podcast.
Sabalenka had dethroned Swiatek for a brief while last year when Sabalenka had reached the US Open final. However, the Polish ace reclaimed it a few weeks later. Since then, Swiatek has owned the No.1 rankings but Sabalenka said she is hoping to reach the top one day.
What it means for Aryna Sabalenka to win the US Open title
After her title-winning run in New York, Aryna Sabalenka is proud of herself and her family. The Belarusian ace said ever since she lost her father, her dream has been to put her family name in the history of tennis and she has finally achieved it, it feels surreal to her.

After I lost my father, it’s always been my goal to put our family name in the history of tennis. Every time I see my name on that trophy, I’m so proud of myself, I’m proud of my family that they never gave up on my dream and that they were doing everything they could to keep me going. So I had this opportunity in life. So it really means a lot.Aryna Sabalenka said after winning the US Open title
The three-time Singles Grand Slam champion cannot believe that she has already achieved so much. Nonetheless, there is a lot left to achieve yet, like (reclaiming) the World No.1 ranking. Sabalenka currently has 8716 ranking points, which she would like to bolster in the remainder of the 2024 season.
