Aryna Sabalenka has been arguably the best female player since August. With a Grand Slam and two WTA 1000 titles, she overtook her rival Iga Swiatek in the WTA No. 1 position on Monday (October 21). The announcement led Sabalenka’s boyfriend, Georgios Frangulis, to pen down an adorable reaction on social media.
After Wimbledon, Swiatek had a 4,224-points lead over Sabalenka, who missed out of the Grand Slam action due to a shoulder injury. However, Sabalenka returned to the court during the North American swing. She claimed the Cincinnati Open and US Open, cutting Swiatek’s lead margin. Swiatek then withdrew from the Asian swing, despite being the defending champion of the China Open.
Sabalenka didn’t win the China Open but did well to reach the quarterfinals. At the Wuhan Open, she beat Qinwen Zheng to claim the title for the third consecutive time. The gained points from the China and Wuhan Open were enough to move her total points to 9,706, while Swiatek’s points were reduced from 9,785 to 9,665 for not participating in the two WTA 1000 events.
Sabalenka now has a narrow 41-point lead in the WTA No.1 position. The updated ranking position made her boyfriend Georgios Frangulis excited as he penned down a heartwarming message on social media.
Meanwhile, the battle for year-end No. 1 is going to be decided at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Last year, Swiatek reclaimed the top position after winning the Finals, she will be hoping to do the same for the second consecutive time in November.
