After being a casualty to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the ATP and WTA tours in tennis had to be suspended in order to save lives. Fortunately, tennis was able to resume mid-way by July-August however behind closed doors meaning, without the fans.

The atmosphere of playing without any crowd support was a tough one for the players to get accustomed with as it called for a new setting altogether. Some events, such as the French Open, permitted very small crowds into venues, while others such as the US Open, closed their doors to spectators completely.

“The roar is just something I missed,” said Berrettini.

Having the fans cheering for him is what makes a difference for the Italian player who is looking forward to play in Melbourne amongst a jubilant crowd returning to the stands after a long time on the ATP tour.

“It is something unique, something that for me makes all the difference at the end of the day.”
