Barbora Krejcikova beat Italian Jasmine Paolini to lift her maiden Wimbledon trophy, emulating her mentor, the late Jana Novotna. She dug hard to come out on top and thrill the Centre Court crowd, including tennis legend Ashleigh Barty, who praised her for her outstanding performance.
Krejcikova went into the final knowing that she got the better of Paolini once in their only career meeting on the WTA tour — in the 2018 Australian Open qualifying. The Italian, however, has been on good form in the last few weeks, having reached the French Open and Wimbledon finals.
Krejcikova started the match on the front foot and sealed the first set quickly before Paolini worked her way back into the match and took it to the third set. While there was little to separate the two in the closing stages of the match, Krejcikova got the advantage when Paolini was serving at 3-all. She converted her second break point of the game and consolidated the lead to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
After the match, retired star Barty hailed the 28-year-old for her clear, concise, and accurate display.
It was an exceptional final, with ebbs and flows, we have to credit Krejcikova for the way she started that match. It was just remarkable, she was clear, so concise and so accurate [in] how she wanted to play and the tactical shift from Paolini to work herself back into the match was amazing. A serving display like that in the third set when the match is so much on the line for Krejcikova, is just outstanding.
Ash Barty said while commentating on the final
Champion Krejcikova will take home $3.4 million prize money, while Paolini will pocket $1.7 million as the runner-up.
Barbora Krejcikova “supper happy” to earn her first Wimbledon against a tough
Barbora Krejcikova revealed that she had to be brave to beat Jasmine Paolini and win her maiden Wimbledon title. The Czech Republic star had struggled at the beginning of the year but managed to find her form at the All England Club.
Before this year, Krejcikova’s best result at Wimbledon was a Round of 16 exit in 2021. This year at SW19, she won six consecutive matches on grass for the first time in her career. After the title win, she said that no one expected her to go the distance at the grass Major.
I was just telling myself to be brave. It was such a difficult match, a great final, a great competition and I’m super happy to be standing here enjoying this moment. I think nobody’s going to believe I won Wimbledon. I still can’t believe it. Two weeks ago I had a very tough match, 7-5 in the third set and I wasn’t in good shape.
Barbora Krejcikova said during her on-court interview
The World No. 32 is the sixth player in the Open Era (after Ann Jones, Virginia Wade, Jana Novotna, Marion Bartoli, and Angelique Kerber) to win her first Grand Slam singles in Wimbledon after turning 28.
