“Ash can still be a valuable asset for India,” Mohammad Kaif backs Ravichandran Ashwin’s return to national T20 side

Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin ramped up yet another impactful performance in the Indian Premier League. But the light blue of India still eludes the crafty spinner. Ashwin finished with 13 wickets in 15 games for Delhi Capitals and conceded at an economy rate of 7.66 as his side went on to appear in their maiden IPL final. The Tamil Nadu spinner had an impressive IPL 2019 too as he scalped 15 wickets in 14 games leading the Kings XI Punjab.
Despite his consistent performances in the cash-rich league, Ashwin failed to earn a call up to the T20 side. Ashwin’s last appearance in white-ball cricket for India was back in 2017, and ever since he has been India’s Test specialist.
Read and re-read his big scalps from IPL 13
The Capitals’ assistant coach Mohammad Kaif believes that the Indian team should call up Ashwin in the shortest format as he can be a valuable asset. The former India cricketer went on to name Ashwin’s big scalps of the season as he backed his return to white-ball cricket. The big fishes who fell prey to the offspinner included the likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma and even KXIP’s heavy-hitter Chris Gayle.
“Virat, Rohit, Pollard, Gayle, Warner, QDK, Karun, Buttler, Smith, Paddikal, Pooran. Read and re-read @ashwinravi99’s list of big scalps from IPL 13, mostly in power plays. Feel Ash can still be a valuable asset for India in T20Is,” Kaif tweeted on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Ashwin is gearing up for the upcoming Test series against Australia. India and Australia are slated to square off against each other in three ODIs, three T20Is and four Tests starting from November 27.
