Tennis great Ashleigh Barty gave a fitting tribute to former World No.1 Andy Murray after his Wimbledon farewell last Thursday. The three-time Grand Slam champion played his last match at SW19 in men’s doubles action with Jamie Murray.

Barty returned to Wimbledon this fortnight and was present in the Center Court crowd to see Murray’s farewell ceremony. In her press conference today, she expressed nothing but respect for the Scottish legend.

Andy is an amazing athlete. He’s been an inspiration and someone who’s fought so hard for equality. He’s always stood up for us and our tour. He’s an amazing person. I think it’s really special that at the tournament, he was able to celebrate and reminisce on his career. It’s not over yet I understand. I hope he’s able to bow out on his terms to the best of his ability.
Ashleigh Barty said in her Wimbledon press conference

Barty was a three-time Grand Slam singles winner and retired from the game in March 2022. She was the first WTA player to bid farewell to the sport as World No.1 since Justine Henin in 2008. However, the Belgian did return from retirement in 2010.

Murray was booked to play Men’s Singles at Wimbledon this year. However, he withdrew before his first-round match last Tuesday as he was unable to recover from the back injury he sustained at the Queen’s Club. Hence, he opted for men’s doubles action with his brother Jamie Murray and mixed doubles action with Emma Raducanu. He lost in the first round of men’s doubles before Raducanu pulled out of their mixed doubles match due to sore wrists.

Murray was supposed to play his last Wimbledon match on Saturday. However, Raducanu withdrew just hours before the game. Due to his back surgery, he did not play in men’s singles this year. Instead, the two-time Wimbledon champion did play men’s doubles with his brother Jamie Murray but they lost in the first round.

Murray’s final match at Wimbledon might have already happened. But he got an offer to play mixed doubles with Ashleigh Barty, the 2021 Wimbledon champion, next year.

After losing in men’s doubles, Murray gave an emotional speech. He said that he wanted to keep playing, but his body couldn’t handle it anymore. His last singles event will be at the Paris Olympics in July-August.

It was to be expected!
