Sebastian Vettel left Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season and secured a seat with the newly named, Aston Martin. Formerly known as Racing Point, the F1 team owned by Lawrence Stroll decided to change it’s name in favor of Aston Martin. There seems to be a lot of similarity between Aston Martin and Mercedes. Last year, Racing Point was dubbed as the Pink Mercedes for it’s technical similarity with Mercedes W10. The team was penalized by the FIA for copying rear break ducts, which cost them a P3 in the standings.

Moreover, Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes is also a shareholder in the Aston Martin Lagonda luxury car group. However, Sebastian Vettel believes that this does not mean that Aston Martin cannot get any closer to Mercedes when it comes to the race, and states that there is nothing stopping them from outracing the German giants on merit.

When asked by a reported as to whether Aston Martin will be weakened by Mercedes’ superiority, Vettel shot down the question and stated that the matter was very ‘old school.’ “I’m not worried about that. I think your fears are old school. The world has moved on. In the past, probably you were right. In some cases it may still be present, in other cases a long time ago,” Vettel said.

With somebody like Mercedes, I think we can trust that you get a very fair treatment and if you are faster you will be allowed to beat them. I think this sort of mindset [of thinking there is a disadvantage] is way out of date as a principle. I see where you’re coming from, but I’m not worried,” he added.

I think if we are very close to Mercedes that’s a very good achievement: Vettel

Sebastian Vettel believes that his team will do a good job if they can get closer to Mercedes this season. The German giants have won seven consecutive titles and are the team to beat in 2021. “I think if we are very close to Mercedes that’s a very good achievement, so that will be the last thing I’ll worry about,” the German said.

Sebastian Vettel stated that he is also feeling positive about working with Mercedes power this season. “The Mercedes unit is supposedly the strongest on the grid and it will be my first time with Mercedes in Formula 1,” added the four-time former World Champion. I’m looking forward to seeing how they work,” he said.

We [Aston Martin] are obviously not in charge of the engine and its development and we can benefit from such strong partners, so we can get on with the car and only worry about that. I think we have lots of stuff to do on that front,” Vettel added.
