Since the start of 2024, Arsenal were without a loss in the Premier League. They remained unbeaten in 11 matches, out of which there was only one draw. Unfortunately for the Gunners, their unbeaten run this year has now ended at home on 14th April.
They lost to Aston Villa, which is managed by ex-Arsenal coach Unai Emery. They won the match by scoring two goals, thanks to Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins. Both goals came in the dying minutes of the game as well, with Bailey scoring in the 84th minute and Watkins just three minutes later.
Earlier leading the league table, they now drop to 2nd place, two points behind Manchester City. They still have six game weeks left, but their fixtures are harder compared to City’s. They will host Chelsea and then play Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur away.
Meanwhile Manchester City’s toughest opponent is also Spurs, who they’ll play away. But at the same time, they face four teams that are 10th and below. However, Liverpool are still in the title race, despite their loss to Crystal Palace at home on the same day.
Fans mock Arsenal as they bottle title
Before the start of the 33rd game week, Arsenal were at the top of the league but now drop two points behind Manchester City. Some fans mocked the Gunners for “bottling” the league once again, like they did the previous season. Many Arsenal fans were disheartened after the loss, believing they lost their chance at the title.
Check out their reactions:
Arsenal now shift their focus to their midweek clash with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. The two teams finished the first leg with the score-line of 2-2 at the Emirates and now they play at the Allianz Arena. In the weekend they will play Wolves and then Chelsea just two days later.
Meanwhile, title rivals Manchester City play Real Madrid on Wednesday night in the UCL, hosting the Spanish club. Along with that they then play Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals. City’s next league fixture comes on 26th April, where they play Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Liverpool also have a midweek fixture, facing Atalanta in the Europa League.
