On Sunday, the Houston Astros clinched their 8th American League West division title with a 9-0 win over the Athletics. With an 81-81 record, they also set a record for the worst record for a postseason team in MLB history.
Following their 6-5 loss on Friday, the team was left with a 79-81 record. As the Texas Rangers lost too, it was confirmed that whoever won the division would not finish with a winning record.
On Saturday, both the Astros and Rangers won their respective games, leaving the Astros in pole position. With them owning the tiebreaker over their rivals, all they needed on Sunday was to match their record.
The Rangers ended up losing 6-4 against the Minnesota Twins, finishing with an 80-82 record. The Astros, meanwhile, picked up an emphatic 9-0 win over the A’s, ensuring their path to the playoffs for the 9th time in the last 10 years.

Their 81-81 record to make the postseason is the worst of any team, excluding shortened seasons. Before this, the San Diego Padres held the record for the worst division winner with an 82-80 record in 2005.

Having a better record in the league does not always guarantee a playoff berth. The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Pittsburgh Pirates both missed the playoffs despite having a winning record. The D-backs lost out on the final Wild Card spot in the National League with an 86-76 record.
As for the Pirates, their 82-80 record marked their first winning season since 2018. However, that was not enough for a Wild Card berth.
Yordan Alvarez proud to help the Astros win the AL West division in a tricky season
The 2026 season was anything but smooth sailing for the Houston Astros. The team had to navigate some tough periods as they battled injuries to key players and had to come back from huge deficits to make it to the postseason. Yordan Alvarez, who is one of the candidates for the AL MVP Award, claimed he was proud to help his team win the division this year.

Last year, the Astros missed out on the postseason. With the Detroit Tigers having the tiebreaker over them, the Astros failed to qualify for the playoffs despite both teams finishing with an 87-75 record.
Alvarez was a major miss last year for the Astros. The designated hitter (DH) played just 48 games due to a hand injury and a sprained ankle.
He finished the 2026 regular season with a career-high 42 home runs and 106 RBIs. His .316 batting average also earned him the batting title. His strong showing has helped his side seal a playoff berth.
Last year, we missed the playoffs by one game and I missed a lot of the season, so I feel very proud of myself to be able to stay healthy this season and be able to help the team get back in the playoffs and win the division.

The Houston-based side will take on the Chicago White Sox in the American League Wild Card Series. With them finishing as the No.3 seed in the league, they will have home-field advantage against the AL Central side.
In the regular season, the Astros went 5-2 against the White Sox. This Wild Card series will mark their 3rd meeting in the postseason, with the White Sox sweeping them in the 2005 World Series before losing in the 2021 American League Division Series (ALDS).
