Kenny Dillingham has been around long enough to know that it’s premature to celebrate before the final whistle. Yet, the Arizona State fans stormed the field in jubilation, believing their team won against BYU.
Up 28-23 with just under ten seconds left on the clock, ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt chose to burn time, throwing the ball away out of bounds. Everyone thought the game ended because the big digital clock flashed 00 to signal the end of the game.
Fans in yellow flocked to the turf to celebrate a crucial win against a direct rival. They even uprooted one of the goalposts from the ground to take it home with them.
While the crowd celebrated believing the Sun Devils had won, the picture on the sideline spoke a very different story. ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham made his way through the sea of fans to the review monitor, where the officials gathered around to check something.

A verdict from the officials made Dillingham go berserk. He started throwing curse words at them while his wife, who was among the fans, stood next to him, petrified by his behavior.

After 13 minutes of confusion, BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff threw a Hail Mary from inside his 49. His receiver caught the pass, but he was short of the endzone. The game ended, and the Arizona Sun Devils won.

Kenny Dillingham was thrilled by the ASU support
The situation eventually cooled down at the final whistle. During the post-game presser, Dillingham praised the ASU fans for creating a great atmosphere inside the stadium.
He further asked everyone to never lose faith in the team and buy season tickets instead of queueing up for individual ones that cost more. From his point of view, the Sun Devils will play in the postseason—definitely a Bowl game and perhaps even beyond.

Here’s what Kenny Dillingham had to say after the 28-23 win over No. 14 BYU to firmly put ASU in the middle of the College Football Playoff race: pic.twitter.com/04PXlNSRXt
The win elevated ASU to the position of BYU, but the Sun Devils have a better conference record of 6-1 while the Cougars lost twice. Beating local rivals, the Arizona Wildcats will guarantee a spot in the BIG 12 title game if Colorado loses against the Oklahoma Cowboys and BYU beats Houston.
