The Athletics are making some big moves in the offseason. After signing former New York Yankees starter Luis Severino on a record-breaking deal, the team has now acquired another top pitcher in Jeffrey Springs. The A’s landed the southpaw from a multi-player trade deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The A’s are one of the teams who are currently in the rebuilding phase. The pitching department is one area where the team needs some experience.

In the trade deal with the Rays, the A’s gave away right-handed pitcher Joe Boyle, and two minor league prospects Will Simpson and Jacob Watters. They also landed Jacob Lopez from the Rays in this deal on Saturday.

The 2024 season marked a return from the Tommy John Surgery for Springs. The southpaw underwent this surgery in April 2023 and missed out the remainder of the campaign last year.

In July this year, he made his return to the mound. During this, he made seven starts for the Rays and went 2-2. He posted an ERA of 3.27 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 11 walks in 33 innings pitched this season. In September, he was shut down with left elbow fatigue.

Athletics General Manager David Frost would later speak on the workload of Springs. The executive claimed that Springs could easily throw more than 160 innings this year despite his relative little workload over the last couple of seasons.

He obviously has not had much of a workload the last two seasons. I don’t see any reason he couldn’t throw 160-plus innings this year. We’ll keep an eye on him as the season goes along, but it’s not a situation where we go into the year having to worry about it.

GM David Frost said as per MLB.com

The A’s GM also admitted that he does not rule out adding another starter to the team in the offseason. For now, Springs joins a pitching rotation consisting of Luis Severino, JP Sears, and rookie stars such as Joey Estes and Mitch Spence.

Reddit reacts to Athletics landing Jeffrey Springs through trade

Fans on social media have been highly critical of the Athletics making some moves after leaving the city of Oakland. A few days ago, they slammed the team for picking Luis Severino on a franchise-history $67 million deal. Fans on Reddit have now attacked team owner John Fisher for landing Jeffrey Springs through a trade.

The reason the fans are attacking the team owner is highly likely due to the team making moves after leaving Oakland. During their final years in the city, fans had urged Fisher to keep the team in Oakland. However, they were unable to save the team and had to move away.

One user on X did not seem pleased with Fisher regarding this development and dropped a NSFW comment. The user wrote, “F**k you John, Just f**k you“.

After finishing the 2023 season with a 50-112 record, the A’s improved a bit in the 2024 season. Though they still finished with a negative record, the A’s went 69-93, the fifth-worst record in the league.
