Tokyo Olympics: Peruth Chemutai scripts history, wins gold in Women’s 3000m steeplechase

Peruth Chemutai of Uganda claimed the gold medal in Women’s 3000m steeplechase on Wednesday, as she became the first woman from her country to ever win the gold medal.

USA’s Courtney Frerichs took the silver medal, whereas, Kenya’s Hyvin Kiyeng clinched the bronze medal. The final was not the fastest of all, as Chemutai won with a timing of 9:01.45, whereas, the Olympic record stood at 8:58.81. Peruth Chemutai accelerated brilliantly in the final lap, as she established a good gap between herself and second placed, Courtney Frerichs.

Peruth Chemutai has seen a drastic rise in her career in a span of just over three years. Just three years ago, she claimed the silver medal at the World U20 Championships. The 22-year-old also competed at the Rio Olympics, where she could not even make it to the finals of the same event. The youngster took up running only at the age of 13 after attending the District Athletics Championships in Bukwo.

Courtney Frerichs, who finished 11th last time around, claimed the silver medal for USA. Rio Olympics silver medalist, Hyvin Kiyeng of Kenya had to settle for a bronze this time around. Ethiopia’s Mekides Abebe missed out on a bronze medal, as she finished the race on the fourth position.
