Shaili Singh‘s journey as a long jumper started with an article in a local daily about selection trials for a sports hostel in Lucknow. Shaili’s mother came across the article back in 2016 and that was how the Indian prodigy got into the sport. A year later, the then 13-year-old caught the eye of Robert Bobby George, who coached his wife Anju George to the country’s first World Championships medal, at the Junior Nationals in Guntur.
While Shaili performance was not outstanding as she was fifth with 4.64m in the under-14 girls’ category, the way she went about her jumps impressed Bobby. A week later, Bobby’s wife Anju also felt the same when she saw Shaili in action in the Inter-District Nationals in Visakhapatnam. And the power couple decided to pick the girl for the Anju Bobby Sports Foundation, which is being run as a junior national camp, at Bengaluru’s SAI Centre.

Under the guidance of Robert and his World Championship bronze medallist wife Anju, Shaili Singh started her journey towards realising her true potential. Less than a year later, the youngster broke the under-16 national record at the junior nationals at Ranchi in November with a leap of 5.94 metres.
The 15-year-old then went on to break the under-16 and under-18 national records at the junior nationals in Guntur back in 2019. Her 6.15m leap saw her qualify for next year’s under-20 World Championships in Kenya. Shaili, who broke the national junior record earlier this year, bagged the silver medal at the U20 Worlds with a personal best effort of 6.59m.

The duo of Robert Bobby George and Anju George were impressed by the hunger and spark in Shaili while others were too fixated on the top performers. The power couple took up the young girl from Jhansi at a tender age and have shaped her up with the proper techniques to forge a champion out of a “small and frail” girl.
It was only due to their guidance and care that India today has yet another bright prospect in a track and field event. Following her spectacular showing at the U20 World Athletics Championships, Robert has promised that Shaili will breach the 7m mark in the next three years.

Shaili participated barefoot in her first school-level events as the family couldn’t afford shoes.
