Well, no one probably saw that coming. The Athletics have made a massive move in the 2024 offseason and signed former New York Yankees and New York Mets pitcher Luis Severino on a record-breaking deal.
Severino became a free agent after he rejected the qualifying offer from the Mets. He was the third big name after Pete Alonso and Sean Manaea to decline this offer and explore free agency.
The right-handed pitcher has agreed to join the team on a 3-year, $67 million deal. This is the largest guaranteed deal the A’s have offered to any player in their franchise history.
Previously the highest amount the A’s ever spent on a player was Eric Chavez. In 2004, the team gave the third baseman, a 6-year $66 million contract extension.

Severino has now surpassed that and created history. This deal for him also comes after he had a solid comeback campaign in 2024 with the Mets. The Dominican international went 11-7 where he picked up 161 strikeouts. In the 2023 season with the Yankees, Severino suffered on the mound and went 4-8 while having a high ERA of 6.65.
The 30-year-old pitcher penned down a message to the Mets after his deal with the Athletics. On X, he thanked the fans and the staff of the team for their support to him.
Thank you new york @mets fans for all the support all year long. Thank you mets staff and front office for everything. I will forever be grateful for an incredible season.

The deal with Severino also comes after the Athletics left the city of Oakland. The team spending huge money after leaving Oakland has enraged a majority of users on social media.
Social media reacts to Luis Severino’s deal with the Athletics
Fans on social media were left stunned when news of Luis Severino agreeing a deal with the Athletics came out. Several of them were left furious with the amount in this deal as it comes after the team moved out of Oakland.

The team had been reluctant to spend massive amounts in recent years. Their relocation to Las Vegas had sparked a major protest against team owner John Fisher.
The team now spending money on stars has not sat well with the fans. Several of them called out the A’s for this. Meanwhile, one fan wrote, “Slap in the face of Oakland” while reacting to this development.

Severino now joins a projected rotation that includes left-hander JP Sears, along with right-handers Joey Estes and Mitch Spence, both of whom showed promise last season as rookies. Given the relatively unproven experience in their other options, the A’s could make a move for another starter in the offseason.
