The Athletics on Sunday completed a historic sweep. They would take down the Houston Astros 7-1 and complete a 4-game series sweep of their division rivals, which sparked some wild reaction among fans on social media.
The American League West division leaders entered this series on a 4-game winning run, which included them sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 3-game series. On Thursday, the A’s would win 5-2 to take the first game of the series.
A day later, a piece of history was recorded. A’s rookie star Nick Kurtz went off against the Astros and finished the day going 6-for-6 with 4 home runs, one double, and one single. He became the 20th different player to have a 4 home run game as the Athletics won 15-3.
The Astros would then end up losing 5-1 on Saturday, leaving them on the brink of a sweep. Despite not having Kurtz in the series finale, the A’s still racked up some runs.
Home runs from Shea Langeliers and Miguel Andujar, and some dominating pitching performances from rookies J.T. Ginn and Jack Perkins from the mound, helped the A’s to a 7-1 win. They A’s ended up outscoring the Athletics 32-7 in the 4-game series win.

This was the first time the Athletics had swept the Astros in a four-game series. It was also their first sweep of the Houston-based side in any form since May 2013, more than a decade ago.
Apart from that, it was also the first time the A’s had swept any team in a 4-game series since Mark Kotsay took over as the manager in 2022. Before this, the last time the Athletics swept any team in a 4-game series was in April 2021 when they took all 4 games against the Detroit Tigers.

Anything can happen in baseball. The Houston Astros, who earlier this month swept the Los Angeles Dodgers, would then get swept by the Cleveland Guardians in the next series. Since then, they lost back-to-back series against their division rivals, Texas Rangers and the Seattle Mariners. Now, they have been swept by another AL West team.

The A’s dominated the proceedings from the start on Thursday. After that iconic 4 home run performance from Nick Kurtz, the momentum in the series was completely on the Athletics’ side. They would pick up two more wins to hand the Astros a 4th successive loss and sweep them in the process, leading to wild reactions among MLB fans on social media.

Despite this sweep, the Astros still hold the top spot in the AL West standings with a 60-46 record. They still have a 4-game lead over the Rangers and the Mariners in the race for the top spot. Meanwhile, the Athletics remain bottom of the standings with a 46-62 record after this huge win.
Astros get bad news regarding Isaac Paredes as injury list grows
The Houston Astros are struggling with injuries. The team has lost several key members in recent weeks, leaving them in a vulnerable position. On Sunday, team General Manager Dana Brown issued some more bad news regarding Isaac Paredes.

The player suffered a hamstring strain while running to first base during the Astros’ 7-6 loss to the Mariners on July 19. He was placed on the 10-day injured list. As per Chandler Rome of The Athletic, his injury is “a little bit more severe than we projected.”
Ahead of the trade deadline, the Astros are now looking to add another player to the team. As per Brown, the team could look more for an infielder in the coming days.
We’re still looking for a left-handed bat, so that didn’t change. If it’s an infielder, great. If it’s an outfielder, we’ll take that as well. It really didn’t change much, it’s just more of a preference to be an infielder now.

Astros GM Dana Brown told the team's pregame show on @SportsTalk790 that Isaac Paredes' hamstring strain is "a little bit more severe than we projected." Paredes is going for a second opinion, Brown said.

"It's tough to be optimistic when you know it's more severe," Brown said
The Astros will first turn their attention towards the Washington Nationals before embarking on a 9-game road trip. The away trip will see them take on the Boston Red Sox, the Miami Marlins and the New York Yankees.
