Zverev has had an indifferent 2021. He reached the Quarterfinals of the Australian Open where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. In the Rotterdam Open that followed, he was beaten in the round of 32 by Alexander Bublik. Bublik won 7-5 6-3. At the Acapulco Open so far, he has beaten Carlos Alcaraz Garfia in the first round, and Laslo Đere in the second.

His opponent for the Quarter Finals is Casper Rudd. Rudd is the first Norwegian player to win an ATP Title, and at only twenty two he has a bright future ahead. Rudd started the year well, he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open where he was beaten by Andrey Rublev. In the tournament so far, he has beaten Daniel Elahi Galán, and in the second round got the better of Tallon Griekspoor in three sets 4-6 6-3 7-6.
