Even though he has not won a trophy yet, the start of the season hasn’t been too bad for Stefanos Tsitsipas. He had a memorable win against Rafael Nadal en route to the Semi Finals of the Australian Open 2021. At the ATP Rotterdam he reached the semi finals and was beaten by a superb Andrey Rublev, 6-3 7-6. His only unexpected loss came at the Open 13 Quarter Finals against doubles specialist Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

His first round opponent here is Frenchman Benoit Paire. Paire has been in terrible form and has been losing his temper on the court too. He has failed to qualify into the second round, in all but one tournament. Not only has he lost his temper and been reprimanded for that but also accused of tanking his final game in a 6-4 3-6 1-6 loss to Francisco Cerundolo at the Argentina Open.
