The year had started terribly for Fokina. A Covid Positive result meant that he couldn’t travel to Australia. Things started to look a little brighter for the twenty-one year old Spanish player, born to Russian parents in Spain, after that. First, he reached the Quarter-final of the Montpellier Open where he beat  Hubert Hurkacz as well.

After a few average tournaments, he again bounced back in the just concluded Monte Carlo Masters where he reached the Quarter-final again, and more importantly he did it on clay. His first round opponent is Alexander Bublik. Bublik is a good player on the fast hard courts, and has the records to show for it.

But on the slow clay courts, his record just goes into a slump. Since 2018 Bublik has competed 22 times on Clay, and has won only 7 of those matches. His last match on clay was at the Monte Carlo Masters first round encounter, which ended in a defeat.

Bublik did well on hard courts but on clay he lost his very first match to Jérémy Chardy in the Monte Carlo masters. The slow courts usually renders the power game of Bublik ineffective. Fokina has a good chance against Bublik on clay.
