Garfia, the seventeen year old clay court sensation, is coming off a fantastic run at the Andalucia Open. On the clay courts of Marbella he defeated veteran Feliciano López in the round of sixteen, and then took on third seed Casper Ruud in the Quarter-finals. He dominated Rudd and beat him in straight sets, 6-2 6-4. The match against Rudd was a clear indicator that Garfia can take on the very best and beat them, for now on clay.
His first round opponent is American Frances Tiafoe. Tiafoe is coming off a good run at the Miami Open, where he reached the round of sixteen. Along the way he beat players like Dan Evans and Dušan Lajović. Although he does like to play on the clay courts and has the variety in his shots, he hasn’t had the success on clay to substantiate that clay is his best surface.
