Frances Tiafoe, got off his 2021 campaign in the best possible fashion as he defeated fellow American, Donald Young in straight sets in round one. The 62 ranked professional then claimed his second round victory against another compatriot by just dropping one set in the game. At 22, Tiafoe is the youngest American man to reach the round of sixteen at the US Open 2020 since 2011. The American last played at the Astana Open where he lost in the semifinals to the eventual champion, John Millman in three sets.
Cameron Norrie defeated the American, JC Aragone in the first round match-up, comfortably in straight sets and then knocked French player Mannarino in straight-sets again but this time with a tie-breaker in the final set. Norrie is known for powerful forehands which has proved to be his vital weapon in the past year.
