ATP and its recent involvement with Saudi Arabia
In recent months, Saudi Arabia has been making waves in the world of sports, particularly in tennis. Their increasing involvement with the ATP has garnered attention and raised eyebrows. What began with hosting a few events has evolved into Saudi Arabia expressing interest in hosting an entirely new tournament.
They had changed the ranking points of the whole circuit, making it a PIF ATP ranking system. For context, PIF is the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. Other than this, the Telegraph had also reported that the PIF wants to merge the WTA and ATP into one tour. It was speculated that the resulting tour would replace the proposed premium tour, which is an ATP-WTA merged tournament.
Even though many of the athletes are still not on board, the Saudi board has a lot planned for tennis and is trying to get the organizers on board. Tennis critics are eager to witness some of the changes that might take place due to the involvement of the Gulf Nations.
