ATP Doha: Despite return, Roger Federer set to drop out of the top 5
Roger Federer has confirmed his participation in the ATP 250 event at Doha next week. This is the first event Federer will ply his trade in a tournament post his Australian Open exit at the semi final stage in 2020. He had lost that match to Novak Djokovic in straight sets 6-7 4-6 3-6. Since then Federer has had two knee operations, and a failed comeback bid.
Federer chose a relatively small event. ATP 250 Doha, to make a comeback. He felt he could do without a few extra eyeballs, watching him all the time. After Doha, he wants to play in the Dubai Open. Dubai Open is an ATP 500 event and much better known than the Doha one for sure.
Federer’s withdrawal from the ATP Miami event will cost him 1000 ranking points
Federer has already announced that he will not be participating in the Miami Open. A wise decision because he will be playing two tournaments in two weeks before that. And at 39 years of age, especially when you are making a comeback from surgery , it’s best not to overexert.
But, his withdrawal from the Miami Open will cost him 1000 ranking points. This is because Federer was the defending champion at the Miami Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas the new no.5 ?
Federer the world no.5 is at 6630 ranking points right now, and close behind him is Tsitsipas as the World no.6 with 6595 points. But with Federer losing 1000 points, even if he wins the events at Doha and Qatar he will still drop down to below Tsitsipas in ranking points.
