Rublev has been one of the best players on the tour this year. He reached the Quarter Finals of the Australian Open, where he lost to the new no.2 in the world Daniil Medvedev 5-7 3-6 2-6. In the very next tournament, the Rotterdam Open, Rublev became the champion beating Márton Fucsovics in the Finals, 7-6 6-4.

Next up for Rublev was the Qatar Open, where he lost in the Semi Finals to Roberto Bautista Agut, but won the doubles title partnering fellow Russian Aslan Karatsev. Rublev is seeded second in this event because of which he had a bye in the first round. In the second round, his opponent is twenty one year old Emil Ruusuvuori from Finland.

Ruusuvuori qualified into the main draw of the Dubai Open. On the way beat two qualifiers Dimitar Kuzmanov and Viktor Troicki. In the first round match here, he beat Jordan Thompson of Australia, 6-3 7-6.
