Andrey Rublev didn’t have a great 2021 season but a lot more was expected of him this year. He had a fairly slow start to the season. He bowed out of the third round of the Australian Open to Marin Cilic but then had a couple of good indoor tournaments. He made it to the semifinals of the Rotterdam Open and then followed it up with a title victory at Marseille.
This week in Dubai, Rubkev defeated Dan Evans and Soonwoo Kwon in the first two rounds before knocking out American Mackenzie McDonald in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he got the better of 5th seed Hubert Hurkacz in three sets 3-6,7-5,7-6(5) to enter another tour final.
Jiri Vesely, without a doubt, has been the surprise of the tournament so far. Despite playing three tournaments in the Australian swing, he was yet to win a main draw match. He then made it to the quarterfinals of the Maharashtra Open and Bengaluru Challenger before bowing out in the first round of the Qatar Open.
He entered the main draw at Dubai this week through the qualifiers and defeated the likes of Marin Cilic and Roberto Bautista Agut in the initial rounds. He then stunned top seed and 21-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he defeated 6th seed Denis Shapovalov in a three-set thriller 6-7(7),7-6(2),7-6(3) to book a date with Rublev.

Rublev will be the obvious favorite on paper given his superior ranking and recent form. He has been hitting very well from the baseline since the last three weeks and bodes well on ATP 500 stage in general. He will have to serve flawlessly as Vesely has returned very well all week. The Czech has made good use of the angles and would fancy his chances to push Rublev to the limit. Expect a thrilling encounter with the Russian winning his second title of the season.
