Viñolas came into this tournament on the back of a decent showing in Barcelona. He reached the round of sixteen at Barcelona before being stopped by Andrey Rublev, in three sets, 4-6 7-6 4-6. In the tournament so far, the seventh seeded Viñolas has beaten veteran Fernando Verdasco in straight sets and then got the better of Pierre-Hugues Herbert in two sets, 6-2 7-6. His opponent in the Quarter-final is Corentin Moutet.

Moutet has not played much this year. He participated in the Australian Open and came back to tour only at the Monte Carlo Masters. The disappointment of a first round exit at Monte Carlo was somewhat redeemed by Moutet when he reached the round of sixteen of the Barcelona Open.
