ATP Finals 2020: Daniil Medvedev breezes past 2018 champ Alexander Zverev in straight-sets, earns 1st victory at The O2
Daniil Medvedev scored his first victory at the Nitto ATP Finals after demolishing Alexander Zverev. Medvedev earned a straight-set victory of 6-3, 6-4 over his adversary in an hour and 29 minutes.
Medvedev and Zverev battled for a second time in this month. Both these results went the former’s way. While Medvedev had to dig deep for the win in Paris Masters 2020, he faced a tame Zverev in the duo’s latest clash.
Medvedev takes the 1st set
The duo exchanges breaks in the first 2 games of the opening set. Zverev scored the first one when the Russian hit a double fault to lose serve in the opening game.
However, Alexander didn’t solidify this lead and from his shaky-racquet came about 3 double-faults in the second game. Daniil capitalised on this moment and levelled up with Zverev. The momentum didn’t stray away from the World No.5’s side as he consolidated his lead of 4-2.
Medvedev wins the first ATP Finals match of his career
The duo remained at serve until 3-3. The 7th game of this set went Daniil’s way as Zverev played another loose forehand. Medvedev noted that Alexander stood well behind the service line to return his serve. In hopes to avoid facing a break point, Daniil played an underarm serve at 4-3 when the score was 30 all. He held that service game and then closed out the match to love, completing his triumph with a leaping backhand winner.
Hence, the first break point in this set was consolidated. Medvedev grabbed the eighth game when and proceeded to serve for the match at 5-4.
The Russian closed out the match with a backhand crosscourt winner. He vanquished Zverev for the second time at another crucial level this month.
