Alex de Minaur or Lorenzo Musetti will clinch their first match win in the ongoing ATP Finals round robin stage. The ATP Finals commenced on November 9, while the final will be held on November 16.

Musetti and de Minaur are part of Group Jimmy Connors, which also has six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. The American was the runner-up last year, losing the final in straight sets to World No.1 Jannik Sinner.

After losing the Australian Open quarterfinal to eventual winner Jannik Sinner, Alex de Minaur reached the Rotterdam Open final only to suffer a three-set defeat at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz. Following multiple failed attempts at reaching the final, the Aussie found himself locking horns with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Citi Open. De Minaur won the match, his first and only title of the season so far.

But Musetti has yet to claim his first win. So far this season, he has played three finals, losing all. After a sluggish start to the season, Musetti reached the Monte Carlo Masters, losing in three sets to Carlos Alcaraz. He lost a few more tournaments without making deep runs before losing the Chengdu Open final to Alejandro Tabilo.

Before arriving in Turin, the 23-year-old reached the final of the first edition of the Hellenic Championship, but couldn’t end the match in favor, losing in three sets to Novak Djokovic.

Musetti is searching for his first title since winning his career’s second trophy at the 2022 Tennis Napoli Cup. Since then, he has lost six finals: three last year and three this year. In Monte Carlo this year, Musetti, for the first time in his career, played a final of a Masters 1000 or above tournament. De Minaur played a Masters 1000 or above level final at the 2023 Canadian Open.

In his first round robin match in the ongoing tournament, Musetti lost to Taylor Fritz, while de Minaur lost to Alcaraz. After this match, while Musetti will be locking horns with the World No.2, de Minaur will face Fritz.

None of these players from this group has lifted the ATP Finals. Alcaraz was the semifinalist in 2023, losing in straight sets to eventual champion Djokovic. Only two players in the draw have won the title: Sinner last year and Alexander Zverev in 2018 and 2021.

While de Minaur made his ATP Finals debut in 2024, Musetti got the chance to make his debut only because of Djokovic’s withdrawal. To qualify, Musetti had to win the Hellenic Championship, or else, his defeat would have made Felix Auger-Aliassime the last player to grab a spot in the last eight.

The Canadian became the eighth player, while Musetti entered the championships as Djokovic’s replacement. Last year, de Minaur lost all three of his round robin matches.

Musetti has met de Minaur four times and holds a 3-1 head-to-head lead. This year, they have met twice, with both the matches ending in the 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medalist’s favor. But those two matches they played were on clay, and it will be the first time they will face each other in an indoor hardcourt event.
