Alex de Minaur‘s chances to qualify for the semifinals of the ATP Finals look nothing but slim. But Taylor Fritz is still a huge contender for the race to the last four.

De Minaur kick-started his ATP Finals campaign with a straight-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, before he suffered a disheartening three-set defeat at the hands of Lorenzo Musetti. Fritz, in his first round-robin match, defeated the Italian but couldn’t repeat the same when he faced Alcaraz, losing the match in three sets.

Alex de Minaur vs. Taylor Fritz: Match Preview

Following his quarterfinal defeat to eventual champion Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open, Alex de Minaur played his first final of the season at the Rotterdam Open only to lose the match in three sets to Carlos Alcaraz. After quite a few tournaments, where he made deep runs as well as suffered early-round exits, de Minaur reached the Citi Open and this time denied Alejandro Davidovich Fokina his career’s first title with a three-set win.

It was also the last time he played a final. Prior to Turin, the Aussie lost to Alexander Bublik in the Paris Masters quarterfinal. The 26-year-old has not yet clinched a Big Title in his career, though he played in the final of one. It was in the final of the 2023 Canadian Open, which he lost to Sinner.

Taylor Fritz, on the other hand, was struggling to make deep runs earlier this season, often winning just one match of a tournament. This continued until the Miami Open, where he lost to Jakub Mensik in the semifinals.

Following a few more early-round exits, the 28-year-old defeated Alexander Zverev in the Stuttgart Open final, and after losing the Queen’s Club Championships opening-round match, the American ace clinched his fourth Eastbourne International trophy by defeating Jenson Brooksby.

Fritz then played his career’s second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, where his run ended with a four-set defeat to eventual runner-up Alcaraz. The next final he played was at the Japan Open, where he once again lost to the six-time Grand Slam champion. Before arriving in Turin, the 28-year-old lost to Bublik in the third round of the Paris Masters.

The last time Fritz won an ATP 500 or above event was at the 2022 Japan Open against Frances Tiafoe. Fritz has taken home just one Big Title, the 2022 Indian Wells, by defeating 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.

Alex de Minaur vs. Taylor Fritz: Match Prediction

De Minaur is playing the ATP Finals for the second time. He qualified for the first time last year and failed to progress to the semifinals. Fritz has made his third appearance in the year-end championships.

On his maiden appearance in 2023, Fritz lost in the semifinals. Last year, he ended his campaign as the runner-up, losing the match to Sinner in straight sets.

De Minaur has locked horns with Fritz 10 times, with both splitting the head-to-head record to 5-5. The upcoming match will be their first encounter since last year’s Davis Cup quarterfinals. In indoor hardcourt events, both have won two matches each against each other.

Match prediction: Taylor Fritz to win in three sets.
