Carlos Alcaraz needs just one match win to qualify for the semifinals of the ATP Finals. In his previous two round-robin matches, Alcaraz defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets, while against Taylor Fritz, he came from a set down to clinch the win.

In his third round robin match, Alcaraz will be up against Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian ace was the last player to qualify for the season-ending championships and has so far won and lost a match. Musetti suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Fritz and later battled past de Minaur in three sets.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Lorenzo Musetti: Match Preview

Lorenzo Musetti is still searching for his first title since winning the 2023 Napoli Cup. The Italian ace has played six finals since lifting his career’s second singles title, losing all. This year, he has featured in three finals. He progressed to his career’s first Masters 1000 final at the Monte Carlo Masters, only to suffer a three-set defeat against Carlos Alcaraz.

Musetti did not play his second final until the Ningbo Open, losing it to Alejandro Tabilo. Amidst the pressure of ATP Finals qualification, Musetti chose to feature in the first edition of the Hellenic Championship, an ATP 250 event, but there too, no success came as Novak Djokovic lifted his second time of the season with a three-set win.

Alcaraz has claimed the most titles this season on the men’s tour. After winning the Rotterdam Open, he failed to reach the finals of the next three events.

But since the Monte Carlo Masters, Alcaraz has made the finals of every tournament he has played (before the ATP Finals) except for the Paris Masters. He lifted titles at the Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, French Open, Queen’s Club Championships, Cincinnati Masters, US Open, and the Japan Open. The six-time Grand Slam champion also played the Wimbledon final but failed to fulfill his three-peat goal with a defeat to Jannik Sinner.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Lorenzo Musetti: Match Prediction

Musetti qualified only because Djokovic withdrew for the second consecutive time. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, also the tournament’s most successful player with seven titles, pulled out of the event at the last moment right after winning the Hellenic Championship, which Musetti needed to win to become the eighth player in the ATP Finals draw.

He was competing for the spot along with Group Bjorn Borg’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who, after his Paris Masters final defeat to Sinner, was scheduled to play in Metz but chose not to. Djokovic’s withdrawal led to the qualification of both Musetti and Auger-Aliassime.

Alcaraz has yet to progress to the championship clash of the ATP Finals. He was the semifinalist in 2023 (lost the match to eventual winner Djokovic) while last year, his run ended in the round-robin stage.

Musetti has met Alcaraz seven times, winning just one match. The 23-year-old secured victory when they met for the first time in Hamburg back in 2022. They will square off for the fourth time this season, following the Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and Roland Garros.

Match prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
