Alexander Zverev vs Dominic Thiem: Match Preview

Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev has fourteen ATP Titles in his relatively short but extremely impressive career so far, and five out of those titles have come on clay. Zverev is in fact the Madrid Open winner from 2018. Zverev had a bye in the first round. In the second he took out veteran Japanese player Kei Nishikori in straight sets, 6-3 6-2. In the third, he overcame Dan Evans 6-3 7-6. But his biggest victory, a kind of a milestone, came in the Quarter-finals when he defeated Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Zverev took advantage of a terrible Nadal service performance and sealed a 6-4 6-4 victory.

His opponent in the Semi-final is Dominic Thiem. The Austrian took some time off after the Dubai Open, around seven weeks, to rest and recover both emotionally and physically. The break seems to have done wonders for Thiem as he has reached this late stage of the competition playing in his first clay court tournament this season.

Alexander Zverev vs Dominic Thiem : Prediction

Alexander Zverev

One quality that stands out for Zverev is his ability to go on a roll. Let me explain. When Zverev gets into his zone, or in form he maximizes that. He wins games, matches, tournaments, and it looks like he is in the zone right now. The twenty-four year old also showed us that he is improving. He was finally able to crack the code against Nadal on clay, bravo!

Thiem took a break and is back rejuvenated. He has faced some decent opponents  so far, but has not faced a top-20 opponent in this tournament yet, and that is where his real test will lie. This match is Zverev’s to lose.

Match Prediction: Alexander Zverev will beat Dominic Thiem in three sets.
