Medvedev had received a Bye in the first round as he is the top seed here in Marseille. So, he is going to play his first match in the tournament against Gerasimov. The world number 3 was on an unbeaten run of 20 matches till the Australian Open final. He was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the final with the score line of  5-7, 2-6, 2-6. The Russian had also beaten the likes of Dominic Thiem, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the ATP World Tour Finals, 2020 which was held in November. He last played at ATP 500 event in Rotterdam in which he unexpectedly lost to Dusan Lajovic in the 1st round of the tournament. The score line of the match was 6-7, 4-6. He will look to gain momentum once again by winning the second round match.

Gerasimov has had a decent run in the recent past. He had reached 2nd round of the Australian open where he was defeated by the eventual semi finalist, Aslan Karatsev with the score line of 0-1, 1-6, 0-6. The world number 76 had then played at the Open Sud de France where he reached the semi finals and lost to eventual champion, David Goffin with the score line of 4-6, 6-2, 4-6. In the ATP 500 event at Rotterdam, he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round with the score line of 6-7, 5-7. Gerasimov is coming into the second round of the Open 13 Provence by beating Yannick Hanfmann with the score line of 6-2, 6-0. He would be hoping to beat the Russian and book a spot in the quarter finals.
