The twenty two year old Frenchman Ugo Humbert is seeded fourth at this year’s Open 13 Provence. Humbert had a decent start to the year at the Australian Open 2021 where he reached the third round. In the third round Nick Kyrgios, Humbert failed to hold his nerve under pressure from the partisan Aussie crowd and went down in five sets.
He gave a better account of himself at the Montpellier Open, where he reached the Quarter Finals. At the Open 13 so far, he had a bye in the first round. He then beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round, 6-36-4. In the Quarter Finals he overcame the challenge of Arthur Rinderknech 4-6 7-5 7-6. His Semi Final opponent is compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Herbert has been predominantly a doubles player in the past and has won all the four Grand Slams. He began to compete in Singles in the last two years.
In the last tournament that he participated in, the Rotterdam Open, he failed to reach the main draw. At the Open 13 so far he has been very good. In the first two rounds he beat the 6th seed Kei Nishikori, and Cameron Norrie. His big scalp though came in the Quarter Finals where he stunned the second seed and World no.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-7 6-4 6-2.
